This mantle presented a little of a challenge because of the height of the hearth and the narrowness of wall to work with and still try to maintain a colonial flavor. Because of the hallway it was not possible to do a classic mantle with crown moldings so we mixed a little Arts and Crafts mantle shelf that included corbels with fluted pilasters. The arch on the side cabinet was designed to be the same height as the hallway arch. Everything was made of birch plywood and solid birch stained to match the existing staircase railings.
