This den was pretty much a blank slate. The leather sofa and television were in their final positions as was, of course, the fireplace. After deciding not to change the fireplace mantle and legs I thought that it could be refined to match the room and also the house better. The detailed appliqués made all the difference. There was also a reading chair that needed to placed. I designed an alcove for a chair that would not hide any of the bookcases and also give the room the feeling of a private library. The bookcases and trim are made from quarter sawn Sapele sealed with a garnet shellac with 3 coats acrylic lacquer.
